On that very special day of the year, only somewhere very special will do. For Valentine’s Day this year, my boyfriend chose JSheekey Oyster Bar for a treat. Why? Because I am notorious in my love of oysters and a bit of bubbly. Normally my oysters arrive by the side of the pier in a seaside place like Whitstable or hand-shucked myself, simply because fancy places are too rich for my pay grade. Look how excited I am! Also a great excuse for a little Valentine’s red!
JSheekey’s originates back to 1800, a haunt of the rich and famous, apparently even the lovely Audrey Hepburn, and is considered one of the finest seafood restaurants in London. We arrived for a late lunch and were seated at a cosy little table for two, right next to an older couple who I could swear were on a blind date!
Of course, we had to go for a first round of oysters and I got their special, the half dozen West Mersea Pearl Oysters and glass of Champagne for £18.75. This is a pretty good deal considering 6 of the West Merseas are £22 each. I dressed mine with the shallot vinegar but my boyfriend loved the other dressing, which I believe was the Hog Wash Sauce, rice vinegar with coriander and jalapeños.
They were amazing and I loved them, however I wasn’t too pleased that they hadn’t detached the oysters from the shell that much. I don’t love having to poke them into submission with my tiny fork. Still, look at these beauties, I wish I was eating them again. We also ordered a batch of the Dungarvan oysters, which were my boyfriend’s favourite and happen to be from Ireland.
We also ordered the shrimp gyoza and the crab and cognac soup but these were nothing to write home about really. However, if you pay a visit, make sure you treat yourself to some tempura oysters with wasabi dressing. For £3.75 each, they are certainly not a budget choice but wow do they pack a punch!
I thought JSheekey’s would be a little stuffy and it certainly wasn’t relaxed but the clientele was pretty varied. Young couples in jeans mixed alongside a couple of suits and trendsetters. We had a lovely time and I adored it. Thanks for a special day.
And just because, we took a sneaky selfie in their glossy windows as we left.
Ratings? Well 5/5, of course!
