Hooray for birthdays! What better way to celebrate than with burgers? Well and with wine. I’ve been wanting to come to Lucky Chip Burgers and Wine since I had heard it had opened. Mostly because a) I do love burgers (although hadn’t been overly impressed with the Lucky Chip burgers in the past) and b) I love wine (and that’s thanks to my lovely husband who has really gotten me into drinking it). But this specific wine place doesn’t just have cheap plonk to go with your burgers, no they have some really spectacular wines that you can have to go with it. Most of them are by the bottle, but on Thursdays, they open up a more expensive bottle and sell it by the glass so anyone can try the wine without feeling like they have to spend quite a lot on a full bottle. When Bella kept pestering me about what my plans were on my actual birthday (because I had many plans for many things during the course of the month, including the epic Circle Line Pub Crawl), I finally decided it would be a great chance to give it a try. So Andrew, Bella, my partner and I trekked all the way to the far reaches of Dalston to give their burgers a go (but mostly so my partner and I could have a bottle of amazing wine for my special day).
I’m not gonna lie, it’s not in a hugely glamorous part of London. The market had already ended for the day, and there was left over food and trash lining the streets. I think I even saw a raw prawn or two. Excitement! Where was this place? We finally found it, and we were shown to our table. Be warned, the venue is really quite small, so it’s definitely a good idea to book ahead, as there’s maybe enough room for 30 people in total. Andrew was of course running late, so we ordered a couple of glasses of the Thursday wine to tide us over until he arrived. We may have also played a round of the very glamorous Celebrity A-Z Trivia Game that Bella had got me for my birthday (and I know pretty much nothing about celebrities, especially those featured in the game). We also decided to order a round of starters to be there when he arrived, so we got the Padron Peppers (because if you know me or have read any of my posts, you will know that I’m a huge fan), Tallegio and Leek Croquettes and Buffalo Wings with Blue Cheese dressing.
Andrew finally arrived and ordered a cocktail, while my partner decided on the very special wine we were to share. He did go for one of the more expensive ones, and as it turns out, they only bought three bottles of it, and we were lucky enough to get the last one. So sorry folks, you will no longer find the 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon on the menu; you’re just too late. (We also took the bottle home as memorabilia). And the wine? It was pretty much spectacular. It smelled amazing (even Bella agreed, and she doesn’t even drink wine) and tasted even better. It really just elevated the meal to a new level.
We also dug into the starters, and they were really delicious. The buffalo wings could have been a bit spicier for me, but they were still really tasty and the meat fell off the bone. And that blue cheese sauce was one of the best I’ve eaten. It was so good that I started dipping my padron peppers in it. Yeah, that needs to be a real thing: Padron Peppers with blue cheese sauce. The croquettes turned out to be fried mac and cheese balls, so we were all really happy with them. We ordered our burgers, and we all went for the special of the month: The Bill Murray. It’s a burger with a soft shell crab on top with avocado and a sweet chili sauce. I know it’s kind of lame to all order the same burger, but Andrew swears it’s his favorite they sell at Lucky Chip, and it really did look like the best one on the menu. (We tried to upgrade to the fancier beef, but apparently there’s a dearth of Galician beef at the moment, so we had to get the regular aged beef. Such a travesty!) We also got the garlic fries and the fries with spicy mayo on the side. They tried to take away my blue cheese sauce, but I wanted to keep it, so the waitress kindly brought us more. How’s that for service?
The burger was really tasty. I remember the burger being saltier when I went to a Lucky Chip before, so maybe they’ve lightened up on the salt crust. The crunchy crab was a great accompaniment to the perfectly cooked burger. It’s not the best burger I’ve had in London, but it’s definitely really high up on the list. I think the wine really helped elevate it as well. We definitely loved the spicy mayo fries and ended up dumping a bunch of the blue cheese sauce on top to just add another level of flavor. I also enjoyed the garlic fries, but the winner was definitely the spicy mayo fries (I’m a spice lover at heart)! We liked them so much, we had to order a second round of them. Nom! During our feeding frenzy, the owner (at least I think he was the owner) wanted to know if he could show the bottle of wine to another table… apparently they were wine merchants, and they wanted to check it out. So we humbly agreed for him to take it, but we watched him like a hawk to make sure he didn’t take any (no not really).
We were looking at possibly ordering some dessert wine, when I was greeted with the celebratory birthday dessert of Sorbet & Prosecco which we all shared. We were then going to try to get the cheesecake, but apparently they were out, which is why my sorbet had a candle in it. So we opted to skip the dessert wine and head home (but then my partner decided we needed a wafer-thin bottle of dessert wine when we got home, and who am I to say no?)
I really enjoyed my time at Lucky Chip Burgers and Wine. The restaurant itself isn’t that exciting, but the service was pretty spectacular, and the owner/wine guy (whoever he was) was very knowledgeable about wine and Champagne and we had a great time chatting with him about all things wine. I think he also appreciated our wine taste, but who knows? The food is really good (even if it is just burgers), but the real reason to come here is to go for broke with the wine. And a special occasion is just the excuse to do it. So if your birthday comes around, you should just come here, order a ridiculous bottle of wine and enjoy good burgers with amazing friends. I can guarantee it will make your birthday that much better (even with the schlep all the way out to Dalston).
