Two words: Lobster Butter

After two weeks in Asia, I was desperate for some good pub food. I know some of you will think I’m mad, after all British food has such a bad reputation, right? Wrong! You’ve been listening to far too many Americans and we all know where that leads!

My very own American had been recommended The Marquess Tavern in Canonbury as a place with amazing food. I was pretty sceptical, but as soon as we walked in the door and checked out the menu, I couldn’t believe I’d never been before. Seafood, steaks, sides aplenty, it’s like the mothership was calling me home. In case you didn’t know, I am obsessed with sauces. To call me the Queen of Condiments would be an understatement.

Even discounting the ample dipping opportunities, the Marquess is such a lovely pub. Beautifully decorated with big squashy chairs to sit in and they even had dog biscuits at the door. A dog friendly pub? If I could live there, I would.

Now, The Marquess isn’t on the cheap side but with a focus on quality ingredients and fantastic dishes, you wouldn’t expect it to be.

While I was keen to try the seafood platter, my boyfriend isn’t as big a fish fan so we went for the grill menu and a couple of my favourites, Aperol Spritz.

With the options on the grill menu, you get two sides included and you can choose some cheeky options like macaroni and cheese or something a bit more virtuous.

My boyfriend chose the Rosemary and Garlic English Lamb Chops with Grain Mustard Mash and Spinach, Rocket and Parmesan. I’m a mash obsessive and this was my favourite side. It doesn’t look like much but phwoar, so buttery.

Now I know you want a close up view of those chops.

I decided on the 28 day dry cured flat iron steak with fat chips and heritage tomatoes with balsamic. A little bit of angel, a little bit of devil, just like myself 😉

The steak was a very good sized portion and perfectly cooked so I shared most of it with my boyfriend. If you are going for lunch possibly opt for something a bit lighter. The chips themselves will fill you up but you won’t be complaining.

Want a cheeky tip? Get the steak with the lobster butter sauce. Yes, you heard me, lobster butter. It’s even better than you imagine. I would love to learn how to make it at home but they would probably soon need a crane to get me out of my apartment.

The Marquess was a wonderful discovery for us, and I have no doubt we will be back. There are so many options on the menu I’d love to try, particularly the dessert. We went during the day and it was very quiet but I imagine if you fancy a slap up Sunday lunch, you may want to book. Get the lobster butter, even if you are just having a salad. Trust me, the Queen of Condiments wouldn’t steer you wrong.
