The Weekly Munch, 9-15 Jul 2016

Here’s our weekly diary of what the Bunch have been eating and drinking this week…


Grant: Last day in the United States, and I was on the hunt for Mexican. There was a small place around the corner that seemed to have decent reviews, so we checked out Cabanna’s Grill in Santa Rosa. All I can say is Yum. I was a pig and ordered the four item combo (tongue taco, chile relleno, chicken tamale and carnitas enchilada) because I wanted to try everything. My husband had the chorizo chimichanga. Everything was absolutely amazing, possibly the best we’ve had in awhile, but it could just be because we’re used to the sub par Mexican in London. The beef tongue was soft and succulent. It really made our last night in the states great!


Vicky: My sister is back in town, and even though I gave her a myriad of new places to try, she wanted to go back to Frenchie. After another amazing meal there, I must say it’s now definitely one of my fav London spots along with KT and the veggies at Nopi (I’m not keen on any of their meat dishes apart from the chicken). I really couldn’t  choose which dish was our fav – the lamb, the fois  gras, the cherry clafoutis or the cheese cake? It was all so good and we definitely overindulged at this sibs dinner.


Becky: I’m always excited whenever Andrew flies into Vancouver – because on the drive back from the airport, its an excuse to get some of the best damn chicken wings I’ve ever had! Always made fresh to order, the full wings from Wu Fung Desserts are so incredibly crispy and juicy, the bone will literally pull right out at first bite.  The light batter is seasoned with 5 spice and sand ginger powder, so simple but so good.


Sanj: The gentrification of King’s Cross continues with the recent opening of The Lighterman, a modern British gastropub perfect for a girly dinner. We enjoyed some late evening sunshine and canal-side views while ordering a variety of dishes to share – crispy squid with chilli and lime, baked goat’s cheese, ricotta and truffled spinach flatbread, asparagus with beans and peas, we scoffed the lot!


Grant: I’m back in London and with the rainy weather it’s been time for my favorite soup noodle place: Tang! I think I’m becoming a bit obsessed, but due to all the junky food I had on my trip, I opted for the Veggie Tang which is a light, flavorful mushroom broth. With a ton of veggies and some fried tofu on top. The tofu sucked up the broth and it really became a powerful taste explosion in my mouth. I’ve basically eaten my way through the menu now, and I love it all. I’m looking forward to the new items coming out on the menu so I can try them all! (Tang is becoming my new Pokemon Go!)


Becky: Now that I’m down to my last month in Vancouver, I’m trying to scope out all the eateries that I haven’t tried yet. Bon Bon Crepe is located inside the Konbinaya Japan Center right in downtown, Vancouver. We went straight for the vanilla and matcha soft serve parfaits.  They’re loaded with goodies inside, like corn flakes, tapioca pearls, red bean, and sponge cakes.  While everything here was good, its all about the matcha soft serve for me!  And who knew that corn flakes are such a yummy addition to ice cream?!


Vicky: We played hooky today (well I didn’t really…) and started at Ozone coffee for a spot of breakfast. Oh, that amazing cold brew is going to haunt my dreams forever! I never thought such a low-caloried, simple glass of brown juice would send me to heaven! Yeah, we ate food too but who cares. Ahhh….. I’m going back to my day-dreaming and watch out for a review soon!

Reviews from the week…
It was V for Vietnamese for Yee Gan’s alphabet dining gang at Cafe East in Canada Water. Meanwhile over in Vancouver, Becky went one better with vegan Vietnamese while Grant was busy discovering Soft Peaks nearby. Back in London, Jules scoped out the dim sum brunch at the Floating Lotus, while Linzi went big at the original Hakkasan – not to be missed!
